EastEnders fans are being taken back in time to last year tonight, as the iconic Pride episode is airing on BBC One.
With the soap having been forced to halt production amid the Covid-19 pandemic, episodes were rationed out to keep it on air.
However, with the final pre-lockdown episode having aired on June 16, the serial drama was forced to go off the air for the first time ever.
In order to ensure viewers get their weekly Walford fix, iconic episodes from days gone by are being re-shown on Tuesday evenings in a primetime BBC One slot.
The classic Den and Angie two-hander was first, followed by Sharongate, then Syed and Amira’s unforgettable wedding, and now it’s the wonderful Pride episode from last year.
What happened during Pride?
Walford celebrated its first ever Gay Pride party last year — in the 5,949th edition of the soap — and it was a big day for several of Albert Square’s finest residents.
Bernie Taylor (Clair Norris) embraced who she truly is, with some assistance from Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White).
Callum ‘Halfway’ Highway (Tony Clay) — who’d been struggling with his sexuality — shared a romantic moment with Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) on the evening before, something which Stuart (Ricky Champ) had witnessed.
Stuart confronted his brother on the matter, who revealed that he and Ben had succumbed to their desires on one occasion.
Callum begged Stuart to not get involved, but he ultimately did just that, as — while the residents of Albert Square enjoyed the celebrations — the aggressive Highway brother met with Ben in the Arches, and left him in a bad way after carrying out a brutal attack.
What happened after Pride?
Ben sported several injuries as a result of the beating he’d taken at Stuart’s hands, and Calum was devastated to learn of what had transpired.
The attack resulted in Ben telling Callum that he ‘ain’t worth the hassle.’
Months passed, and Ben and Callum were unable to resist the chemistry between them.
Unable to keep his night of passion with Ben a secret from fiancee Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty), Callum ultimately revealed the truth on the night before their wedding.
Whitney tried her best to go through with the ceremony, but she was ultimately unable to do so, and the truth about Callum’s romance with Ben was subsequently brought to light following the siege in the Queen Vic — in which Callum cradled a wounded Ben.
In spite of Stuart’s evident homophobia, he ultimately accepted Callum for who he is once he realised that he almost lost him amid the siege.
Ben and Callum ultimately made a go of things — in spite of a few obstacles here and there! — as Callum fully embraced who he is in powerful scenes in the soap’s 5,999th instalment — exactly 50 episodes after Pride.
No, you’re crying.
