Kate Garraway comforted by Susanna Reid as she shares update on husband Derek

Kate Garraway was comforted by her co-star Susanna Reid, as she shared an update on husband Derek Draper’s condition while he continues to battle coronavirus in hospital.

Derek was first hospitalised in March after falling ill with Covid-19. He was initially placed into a medically induced coma and was placed in intensive care after his symptoms worsened.

While he is now believed to be coronavirus free, Derek is still battling the impact the infection has had on his body.

Susanna had asked Kate how Derek, 53, is doing during Good Morning Britain’s Thursday broadcast and Kate revealed that her husband has been ‘pretty stable’ the last few days, but is still going through ‘ups and downs’.

She told her co-host Susanna Reid: ‘I’m doing ok… the problem is, is that I feel I’m just boring everyone to death. It’s the same thing, he’s stable.

‘In between, there’s big ups and big downs – well, not big ups, small improvements. The last few days have been pretty stable, so fingers crossed, really.’

She said that GMB’s weather girl Laura Tobin had arranged for her to have a massage on Tuesday night and said she is feeling ‘very lucky’ following the support she has received from everyone.

Kate revealed that family members, including her daughter Darcey, still haven’t been able to see Derek while he is in hospital, due to safety restrictions in place throughout the pandemic.

‘Darcey hasn’t been to see Derek, mum and dad haven’t been able to [see him] for a very long time now. It’s difficult.’

As she touched on how she is coping through such a tough time, Kate admitted: ‘I’m very conscious that I’ve been in a very strange place and [the children] could do with a bit of fun over half term.’

Issuing a warning to others out there and urging them to follow restrictions and safety measures in place, Kate added: ‘When I see Derek, nobody in the country would want that or for themselves.’

Susanna called Kate an ‘inspiration’ for the way she has handled such a difficult time for her family, while Dr Hilary Jones thanked Kate for being so open about Derek and his health battle over the past six months.

He told her: ‘Yours is a personal story that a lot of people resonate with, so thank you.’

Kate and Derek married in 2005 and the couple share two children together; daughter Darcey, 14, and son William, 11.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
