Disney releases new film based on devastating true story of Zach Sobiech

The devastating true story of singer songwriter Zach Sobiech is being retold as a moving motion picture on Disney Plus.

Zach rose to fame as a talented musician before his untimely death following a tragic illness.

The heartbreaking tale has been dramatised for a new Disney tear-jerker.

With such a sad true story behind the film, it is certainly going to need to be watched with a box of tissues.

Sobiech, from Stillwater in Minnesota, rose to fame in 2012 after one of his songs went viral.

The schoolboy was just 14-years-old when he was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer known as osteosarcoma.

A few years later, doctors told the teenager that his cancer was terminal.

But that did not stop his ambitions and he decided to write songs to say goodbye to his loved ones.

In his senior year he wrote and recorded the song Clouds, which went on to become a viral sensation.

The song, and Zach’s story, attracted attention from director Justin Baldoni who was making a film series about people living their last days.

Whilst shooting the documentary Justin became close to the family and was inspired to turn Zach’s legacy into a movie.

Sobiech passed away in May 2013 just 17 days after his 18th birthday, from complications of osteosarcoma.

His song Clouds had over 3 million views on YouTube at the time of his death, with the song currently at over 14 million views.

It has been streamed on Spotify alone more than 8 million times.

Clouds, directed by Justin Baldoni from a script by Kara Holden, is adapted from the book Fly a Little Higher by Zach's mother Laura Sobiech.

Laura wrote the book in just 12 weeks, shortly after Zach passed away.

Before he passed away, his family decided to launch the Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma Fund to raise money for better treatments and cures for osteosarcoma.

Proceeds from Zach’s music go towards his fund, which has raised millions for osteosarcoma research.

His mum said: “I often think about a moment during Zach’s fight where he was sharing a hospital room with a young boy, who also had cancer.

“He said to me, ‘Mom, if I had to die so that little boy could live, I would.’ Ever since, that’s been the goal of the Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma Fund – to use Zach’s story and legacy to fund research that will save the lives of kids with osteosarcoma.”

‘Clouds’ is released on Disney Plus on October 16 and documents the senior’s last year of high school – and the last year of his life.
